Hand forged yellow gold, opal and diamond rings
This was a lovely commission for two opal and diamond rings that we've been working on over the past couple of weeks. Forged by hand from yellow gold, the rings are formed of square band which curves, tapers and wraps around to form settings for the opals. The two rings have open bands and are set with a black opal on one side and a white diamond on the other. Black opals are highly prized for their vivid colours. These opals are from Lightning Ridge in Australia.
We worked with our customer to design these opal rings, sketching several ideas before arriving at the final designs. Some of our original sketches can be seen below.
The bands were then hand-forged from gold bar to create the curving forms of the rings. Once the shape of the rings was perfected each was set with an opal and diamond. You can see the rings in progress below.
Opals are particularly interesting stones to work with due to their vivid colours and the unique variations found in each stone. We love designing to show off the unique qualities of these very special stones. The two opals in these rings have bright flashes of colour which are displayed to their full advantage by partially open settings.
